New Marlborough and Friends, Open Studios - May 18 and 19, 10 am to 5 pm

The inaugural artist Open Studio self-tour event, presented by The New Marlborough Meeting House Gallery and the New Marlborough Cultural Council, is set to debut with enthusiasm. Featuring 12 talented artists from New Marlborough and Sheffield, along with 5 guest artists, this event marks the beginning of an exciting annual tradition. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore a diverse array of studios, showcasing exquisite pottery, captivating paintings and collages, and stunning jewelry, while gaining insight into the artists' creative processes and the unique spaces they inhabit. From purpose-built studios to repurposed buildings and dedicated home studios, each stop on the tour offers a glimpse into the artist's world. Attendees can look forward to refreshments, live demonstrations, and engaging activities throughout the event.

There is a simple map of the tour in the Open Studio Tour brochure. But GPS is spotty on the back roads, so you may have to plan your tour directions in advance. DOWNLOAD THE BROCHURE or you can find the brochure at the Southfield Store or the Mill River Store.

ART EVENTS 2023

COMING TOGETHER

At a time of rampant discord nationally and around the globe, art can communicate in a way that bridges divides. It can create spaces that achieve surprising harmonies. Presenting the work of some dozen artists,

“Coming Together” aspires to show that disparate elements can be combined to reveal new insights.

MOTION/EMOTION

Only in the most literal sense is a work of art, pinned to a wall or perched on a column, a stationary object. As established in “Motion/Emotion,” the Meeting House Gallery’s second show, art moves and emotes. As it captures the moment, it also inspires a narrative of the before and after, the shift from darkness to light, the transition from birth to bloom.

25th ANNUAL NEW MARLBOROUGH ARTISTS SHOW

In 1998, the Meeting House Gallery hosted its very first exhibit, a show of works by artists residing in New Marlborough. It is a tradition that has continued (with the exception of 2020, year one of the Covid pandemic) every year since. A celebration of the rich creativity that surrounds us in New Marlborough, this season’s show includes works by Ron Brecher, Ann Getsinger, Nikki Hayes, Peter Murkett, Katheryn Freeman, Nanci Worthington, and Joan Griswold, and a collaboration by Kenzie Fields and Sarah Reynolds North.

ABOUT THE GALLERY

The Meeting House Gallery 25th Anniversary

This year the Meeting House Gallery celebrates its twenty-fifth year of enriching our lives by showcasing local and regional fine art. The seed of an idea for the gallery began in the mid-90s when Brad Wagstaff and Ann Getsinger mused that the Meeting House basement would make a great gallery and community space. Shortly thereafter, Mary Richie Smith hosted an art show in the basement for a friend. Not to be one-upped, Ann teamed up with Susie Hardcastle to take on the long hard work of renovating the space in time to host the first New Marlborough Artists Show in 1998. Partaking was a legendary list of local artists, including Ann, Susie, and Larry Burke, Cynthia Atwood, Robin Tost, John Manikowski, Nancy Ruben, and Marianne Swan. The show went up with improvised lighting, minimal signage, a water stained ceiling, and danger of flooding in the foundation. The following year the gallery hosted two shows, and with the help of Ben Harms and Richard Stebbins, and later the Meeting House Gallery Committee, the space was gradually improved to become the beautiful and cherished gallery it is today. Hosting at least three shows every year, the Gallery is a meeting place for artists and art admirers, and one of the jewels of New Marlborough.
